Hazardous Duty Pay
  • Hazardous Duty Pay is an hourly payment made to employees exposed to hazardous working conditions in certain locations and under specified conditions.
     

  • The rate of Compensation is Set by the PEF Contract, but eligibility is determined by the Division of Classification and Compensation in the Department of Civil Service.
     

  • Hazardous Duty Pay is Approved  for Specific Titles in Specific Locations. 
     

  • Hazardous Duty Pay is paid bi-weekly and are reported as compensable income for retirement.  It is are not considered "base pay" for promotion or any other purpose.
     

  • Eligibility is determined by the Division of Classification and Compensation, and the approval is specific to agency, title and duties performed.  Not all agencies are authorized for Hazardous Duty pay nor are all employees in a given title approved for the payment.  (see the link to the State Personnel Management Manual below for more information).
     

 

  Safety Incentive Differential
  • Safety Incentive pay is payment to employees exposed to direct risk and hazard to their safety and health; different from Hazardous Duty pay, the Safety Incentive Differential, (according to Civil Service)  is to allow for additional compensation for “non-people related hazards.”
     

  • Safety Incentive Pay is paid for each day (or portion thereof) the employee meets the eligibility criteria
     

  • Eligibility requires training and use of Level C Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (see the link to the State Personnel Management Manual below for more information)
