e-HealthBeat: National Women's Health Information Center

The National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC) web site at www.4woman.gov is the federal government's clearinghouse for women's health information. It offers information on all major health concerns for women, prevention topics, frequently asked questions about women's health, the latest news and calendar events pertaining to women's health.

Many health concerns covered on www.4woman.gov are exclusive to women, such as ovarian cancer. Other health issues discussed at the site affect both men and women, but are presented from a women's perspective. Women and men are at risk for many of the same health problems, but women might have unique concerns, such as "how will this affect my unborn child," or "will I react differently to my medication than a man would?"

The NWHIC web site provides information on over 800 different health topics important to women. Besides specialty sections on  Healthy Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Violence Against Women,  the site includes a comprehensive list of on-line medical journals, dictionaries and other publications with additional resources. There are sections on Women with Disabilities, Minority Health, HIV and AIDS, Body Image and Hormone Therapy. Visitors can sign up for a free e-mail newsletter called Healthy Women Today.
